Among the many water tumbler materials, glass is highly favored for its stable chemical composition and lack of harmful substances. However, glass comes in different materials, so consider your selection. Here are some common glass materials and their characteristics:
Soda-Lime Glass
Soda-lime glass is thicker and heavier, making it suitable for cold water, but can easily crack in extremes of temperature. Preheat the glass by pouring some hot water into it.
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is made from deeply processed soda-lime glass, resulting in increased strength and shatter resistance. Its maximum operating temperature does not exceed 300°C.
Borosilicate Glass
High-borosilicate glass, composed primarily of boron trioxide and silicon dioxide, is highly resistant to temperature fluctuations. Even if broken, it produces no sharp fragments, making it easy and safe to clean. High-borosilicate glass can withstand temperature fluctuations exceeding 150°C, while low-borosilicate glass can withstand temperature fluctuations exceeding 100°C.
Crystal Glass
Crystal glass is typically available in lead-containing and lead-free varieties. Leaded crystal glass: Metal elements such as lead and barium are added to the glass to enhance its brightness and transparency, creating a crisp sound when tapped. However, long-term use of leaded crystal glasses with acidic beverages can cause the lead to dissolve into the liquid, potentially leading to lead poisoning.
Lead-free crystal glass: This contains no lead and is harmless to the body, though more expensive. However, it has poor low-temperature resistance and is sensitive to cold, resulting in cracking if placed directly in the refrigerator.
